Entré au Crédit Lyonnais en 1989, Alain Berry effectue la première partie de sa carrière dans le réseau commercial pour les clients entreprises. Après un poste de chargé d'affaires et un passage à la Direction Centrale des Groupes d'Entreprises, il occupe successivement les postes de responsable de l'animation commerciale entreprises du Bassin Parisien Sud (1997-1999), puis de Directeur Commercial Entreprises (1999-2002).

Il rejoint en 2002 le service de presse du Crédit Lyonnais au sein de la Direction de la Communication avant d’être nommé responsable des relations presse de Crédit Agricole S.A. en 2003. En 2008, il devient Directeur de la communication de Crédit Agricole Asset Management devenu Amundi après la fusion avec Société Générale Asset Management.

Alain Berry est diplômé de l'ESLSCA Paris.
